COACHING SUPERVISION

SUPPORTING DEVELOPMENT AND REFLECTION OF COACHING PRACTICE

BY EUROPEAN MENTORING AND COACHING COUNCIL (EMCC) GLOBAL STANDARDS, ALSO COUNTS AS CCE AT THE INTERNATIONAL COACHING FEDERATION (ICF)

Coaching supervision is a crucial element of continuous professional development for coaches and mentors. According to the standards of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) and the International Coaching Federation (ICF), it is part of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and contributes to maintaining high-quality work. Supervision is conducted both individually and in groups, to encourage reflection, learning from experiences, and ensuring a safe and quality practice. EMCC 2018

It is essential for all professional coaches who also hold individual accreditations and are registered in the international register of professional coaches.

WHAT IS COACHING SUPERVISION?

Coaching supervision is an interaction in which a coach or mentor shares their experiences with a supervisor. This dialogue allows for necessary support, space for reflection, and learning from experiences. Supervision benefits both the coach and their clients, as well as the organizations from which clients come.

Supervision ensures the quality of work and provides a safe practice. It allows for deep reflection and supports the coach's development in various aspects, including the quality of their work, personal development, managing complexity, and handling emotions.

WHY COACHING SUPERVISION?

Quality of Work and Safety of Practice:  Ensures high-quality work and ethical, safe practices.

Coach's Personal Development: Promotes personal and professional development, strengthens competencies, and develops the capacity to handle complex challenges.

Reflection and Self-awareness: This enables the coach to intensely develop the ability to learn from each coaching situation. Encourages reflection on what is happening within and around the coach.

Systemic View: Includes a systemic view of relationships and interdependence of various stakeholders in the coaching process.

When choosing a coaching supervisor, it is important to consider the following aspects:

Experience: The supervisor should have extensive experience in coaching different clients and contexts. Qualifications: Must be professionally trained and have accreditation for coaching supervision (ESIA).

Regular Supervision of the Supervisor: The supervisors themselves must undergo regular supervision.

Membership in an Organization: Should be a member of the overarching organization with a code of ethics (EMCC & ICF).

Transparency of Approach: Must be able to explain their approach and framework for supervision.

HOW MUCH SUPERVISION DO WE NEED?

EMCC recommends at least one supervision session for approximately every 30 coaching meetings to maintain the quality of work. A professional coach must have a minimum of 4 supervisions per year.

Professional coaches must maintain a supervision log to preserve their accreditations, as coaching supervision is a mandatory part of the coaching practice for professional coaches. Coaching supervision is part of CPD (Continuous Professional Development) and is mandatory for professional coaches who are not only certified but also individually accredited (enrolled in the international register of confirmed coaches) and holders of personal titles (For EMCC GLOBAL EIA HOLDERS: Foundation, Practitioner, Senior, Master; For ICF CREDENTIALS HOLDERS: ACC, PCC, MCC), when renewing personal licenses. You can choose between group or individual coaching supervision, each with its advantages.

WHAT DO WE ADDRESS IN SUPERVISION?

In coaching supervision, we address four needs or aspects:

Formative Function: Connected to quality, standards, and ethics when working with clients.

Normative-Developmental Function: Linked to individual growth and development of the coach (competencies & capacities) and practice development.

Personal Resources-Restorative Function: Processes experiences and increases the ability to work from a source, including resilience and self-confidence.

Systemic Function: Connected to support and exploration of how to deal with the complexity of challenges.

COACHING SUPERVISION IS CRUCIAL FOR ENSURING HIGH-QUALITY COACHING PRACTICE. CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUPERVISOR AND REGULARLY PARTICIPATING IN SUPERVISION IS AN INVESTMENT IN PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND IS CRUCIAL FOR MAINTAINING STANDARDS OF ETHICAL WORK IN COACHING.
